Residents take back their town

After SAMWU strikers, many of them from outside Jeffreys Bay, saw fit to trash the streets of our town, several residents took it upon themselves to clean up the mess in Da Gama Road on Wednesday afternoon, 17th August. Three members of the JBRA committee and three volunteers spent around 1 hour clearing half the parking lot in front of the KM offices. Finally, 15 black bags of rubbish were removed to the Humansdorp rubbish dump. The next day the strikers appeared to lack the energy and the materials to rubbish the cleared area again.

One of the voluntary "cleaners" said, "The strikers and the unions do not own the dialog in South Africa. Their interests are not the only interests to be protected. The unemployed, the elderly, the children, the taxpayers, they also have rights under our constitution, which many strikers seem to forget. But no one has a right to damage the property of others and deface their environment."
